Program Profile International Double-Degree Program (S2) MA Sociology, Universitas Gadjah Mada & Master of Social Policy, The University of Melbourne

 Program Description

This is an International Double-Degree program in which students will undertake both MA in Sociology (with a special emphasis on Labour and Social Security) at UGM (Yogyakarta) and Master of Social Policy at the University of Melbourne, Australia. The establishment of this program is to meet the urgent need for specialised academic training in social policy, especially on employee social security. From 1 January 2014, the Indonesian government began establishing the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Employee Social Security Agency) following the enactment of Law Number 40/2004 on the National Social Security System (SJSN) and Law Number 24/2011 on the Social Security Provision Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial, BPJS) in which the delivery of social security is divided into two organisations. BPJS Kesehatan (General Health Insurance) for universal health insurance, and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Employee Insurance) for work-related risks and entitlements.

Meanwhile, there has not been adequate academic effort to study current and future challenges in improving the provision of social security. Therefore, Universitas Gadjah Mada in partnership with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and the University of Melbourne have initiated this Double-Degree program. The distinguishing feature of this program is that students will have an opportunity to learn about the current dynamics of labour and social security issues in an Indonesian context, while at the same time they will also gain substantial knowledge of the same issue in a global context. Such academic training will provide students with both rich theoretical understanding and high quality practical skills for putting their knowledge into practice. This program is designed for employees of government bodies working on social security provision and individuals working for NGOs or private sector in the field of social service provision or social policy/program analysis and planning.
